Art? | Where is the art? |
|
There is a great deal of discussion about what 'art' might be today, how it is shown and at which sort of venue. We expect to to find art in an art gallery but it clearly exists in other locations. The One Million Points Of Light Project does not exist - except for digital information in a database located on a web server in Nottingham, UK. Can it be art if it does not exist?
Each time someone views One Million Points Of Light, current data about the project is downloaded from the Internet to produce a luminous image displayed on their monitor. Now the work does exist and can be seen simultaniously in thousands of locations. These might be on a screen in a gallery, museum, library, office, university, laboratory, internet caffee, restaurant, bedroom.
Can something like this, which has no physical form, is constantly changing and is being constructed by thousands of people, in hundereds of locations, at different times, really be art? Visit the Project at www.OneMillionPointsOfLight.com, and cast your vote! |
